Adopting a child—especially from another country—is not just a process, it’s a journey of faith, perseverance, and love. It can take anywhere from 9 to 18 months (on average, about a year), filled with endless forms, stacks of official documents, state and federal background checks, and legal requirements that must meet both U.S. and international standards. Every step requires precision, patience, and persistence. Many documents must be notarized, then authenticated by the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Virginia, before they can even be sent overseas. And once they are, we often face long stretches of waiting—completely dependent on government agencies and foreign authorities to move things forward.
